PDFX is the built on top of a third-party software product called "PDF-XChange" which MicroSabio has licensed and adapted for use with A-Shell. It was initially integrated into A-Shell in build 960 of July 2006, using the PDF-XChange 3.0 printer driver.

Support for the PDF-XChange Printer 2012 (aka Version 5) driver was added in A-Shell build 6.1.1407 in April 2015; see Version 5 FAQ for further details of the update.

Support for PDF-XChange version 9 was added in A-Shell 6.5.1710 of December 2021.
