I've been asked about the existence of an decompiler and/or disassembler for AMOS (presumably to aid in converting/porting some code that runs under AMOS to A-Shell). I do recall that both kinds of utilities existed (from third-parties), but don't recall the details. If anyone who still uses AMOS has any info, please post it and I'll pass it along. Thanks!

We never had one, sorry.

'Back in the day...', Larry White wrote a decompiler that Dave Pallman later supported. I don't have any contract information but somebody else might.

There's been some recent activity on the usenet group alt.sys.alpha-micro (most recently from Mike Noel of Noel Alaska, author of VTAM, looking for some help fixing an AM-1000). Perhaps you could post an inquiry there, Jack. You can find it directly at Google Groups but I don't know how to use Google Groups. I use trn on a NetBSD machine in New York.

I thought a decompiler was released on the AMUS BBS but perhaps it was for sale in AMUS.LOG instead.

Thanks for all the responses.

I did browse the Alpha Micro Google Group a bit (where there is a very long and "edgy" discussion of PDP-8 history, but not much recent about the the Alpha). The most interesting link I found there was to http://ampm.floodgap.com where there is quite a collection of Alpha Micro history, and a download page which includes a decompiler posted by James Jarboe.

So that's one down. The search continues for a DISASSEMBLER (to convert .LIT or .SBR to .M68), which I'm pretty sure existed at one point, although I supposed if one is desperate enough, they could always use FIX.LIT to debug/dissemble dynamically (and copy the screen output to a file).

Thanks again.

I wanted to suggest you post an inquiry, but forgot to say so directly. There are some (besides me) from the AMOS world who still lurk there and may come out of the woodwork to answer an inquiry.

Went to check that PDP-8 thread as I didn't remember it. The original thread (about AMOS similarity to a PDP-10 OS) drifted when I cross-posted it to a computer folklore group, trying to tease up some AMOS & TOPS-10 remembrances. Turns out there was a previous AMOS [Australia Magnetic Operating System (single user)] that was an (incomplete) Australian high school project on a 4K PDP-8.

Threads, especially those that drift, tend to get edgy, especially in folklore groups.
