I have a XP box with no COM ports (suprise suprise)... I need to connect this to a external multitech modem. I know there are such animals as USB -> DB9 adapters, but Im being told here that zterm will not recognize such a port. Can someone give me some insight as to whether this will work or not?

Thanx.

I think there may have been a problem addressing COM ports above COM4, but if you have no COM ports built-in, then you should have no trouble using a standard USB-to-COM adapter (< $25) and defining the new port as COM4 or less.

Thanx for the info, Jack. With said USB to COM adaptor, do you think the com port is definable? I havent picked up one yet, but i am just curious... but nevertheless, i know that if the com port is >4 zterm wont fly. Thanx.

On the one I got (Prolific), it is. You do it through the Device Manager - click on the port, select properties, and then there is an advanced button that allows you to change the buffering, COM port, etc.

Followup:

For any brave soul who wishes to attempt such witchcraft, i am happy to announce that having tried the radio shack USB to DB9 cable, it added a COM3 port to the list of devices on this PC. (w/o any additional setup on my part). I then pointed zterm to COM3 which allowed me to communicate directly with the external modem using the AT Hayes command set.
