The following comments were originally posted in another thread, and have been moved to here. However, the software that runs this bulletin board doesn't offer a good way to move comments from one topic to another. So I've done it "by hand" and all the comments will appear to be from me. I've indicated the original author, time and date of the comments.

FYI, I've had it confirmed by Rod that he has no intentions of doing any further development or patches for ZTERM.

Hmm... that is sad... we still sell many zterm licenses to clients, and there are many vista's popping up out there...Any suggestions?

Just plug away as the administrator and keep fingers and toes crossed?

Why didn't I think of this before? What about AlphaLAN or the other emulators available from UA Systems at www.uasys.com? I've always liked AlphaLAN but haven't used it for over a year. It has good emulations (they claim up to 25x132 lines but I think I set up 66x132 AM65 sessions because I like to squint at sdiff output). I've even heard a Unix guy claim they have the best VT100 emulation available.

Perusing the site, I see their download link claims 3/16/2007 for the latest release (version 9.0.6.1) but I find nothing about Vista on the site. Such a recent date may address Vista issues but you'd have to call to make sure.

So what does ZTerm offer that AlphaLAN/STEP/SecureLITE doesn't have?

Any ideas as to the costs? It used to be a bit pricey, but as you say, a good emulator.

In light of the new info on ZTERM's future, Jack and I are working on some ideas that would apply to all A-Shell users/resellers. Thinking and talking about AlphaLAN is one of the options, and we've been doing that. Give us a few days, if you would, and we'll come up with a plan. Thanks.

You can see info on AlphaLAN, including retail prices, here: http://www.uasys.com/alphalan.html

It's still rather pricey for new versions but apparently older versions are available. You can get version 8 of all their products and go back as far as 7.1 for STEP. That may be enough if all you want is AM-62 emulation.

The web site itself is very confusing and hard to find what you need. It looks like it hasn't been updated in years but someone hid info their about the new version that came out last March. According to the support page, this is the first release that supports Vista.

Release notes for at least version 8 can be downloaded but more recent manuals may be available if you download current versions. I haven't done so yet. Manuals and CDs can be purchased but they don't come with an install license.

Their single user pricing is approx. $70 for SecureLITE, $125 for STEP, and $325 for AlphaLAN. volume discounts are available. Shop carefully so you don't pay for what you don't need! Or wait for word from Jack and Ty.

I think I have a copy of AlphaLAN on an old PC. I'll have to see later if I can revive it.

This is Umesh Jindal from U. A. Systems, Inc. and Ty Griffin just approved my registration to this forum. It is good to be interacting with some old friends through this forum.

Our terminal emulation products, STEP++ and AlphaLAN++, version 9.0, are Windows Vista compliant. They are fully supported and we regularly post new builds (latest Build is 9.0.7.1).

If you have a previous copy of AlphaLAN or STEP, you can upgrade these licenses to version 9.0, our latest and greatest, at 50% OFF the normal price for purchase of a new license.

You can visit www.uasys.com for more details or download a 30 day FREE evaluation copy. You may contact me at umesh@uasys.com or send your query to sales@uasys.com.
